Does there need to be a gap between metamaterial and an antenna?

Hello Jgarcia,

A quick answer would be yes. Depending in the type of metamaterial, some you can run right up to the edge of the antenna and others you will nee to keep it pulled back a certain distance so as to not short the antenna traces and fields and remove the metamaterial properties. Can you share the type of metamaterial you are considering using? Multiple split ring resonators (MSRRs), reactive impedance surface (RIS), partial reflective surface (PRS), mushroom-like electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structures, or composite-split-ring-resonator (CSRR)?
