What are the benefits of using a PIFA antenna in a handheld device over another topology?

PIFA or IFA antennas have a short circuit point and are therefore not as sensitive to the hand effect. L antennas without a short circuit point jump much further in the centre frequency than PIFA or IFA antennas.
What is an application? How big is your board (ground plane)? How many should be produced per year?
