Mutica "small ground plane" requirements

Hello,

We are considering switching our design from Rufa to Mutica for improved VSWR, Return Loss, and Average Gain characteristics.

One important consideration has to do with the antenna space requirements.  My understanding is Mutica, including ground clearance, requires 13.4x5.7mm and RUFA requires 14.8x5.9mm of PCB space.  I understand there is to be no ground under and near both antennas, but the Mutica datasheet states "Only requires a small ground plane".  Can you please define what is meant by "small" and where exactly should the ground plane be relative to the antenna, it's size/shape... whatever the relevant characteristics are.

Our project is for wearable electronics, any additional design considerations that are required are also most welcome.

Hi,

Would you be able to tell me what size PCB you plan on using? I could suggest the most suitable antenna for you in the optimal position.

I assume you only need 2.4GHz?

The estimated PCB size will be about 1"x2" and the antenna would most likely be at on the 1" side/end of the PCB.  The PCB will be as small as possible and it may even be advantageous to have the area where the antenna is to be located to be no wider than the antenna itself (or the minimum required).

Mutica would be best suited for that ground plane and I have attached a picture of the ideal placement location.

And just what would be the minimum ground plane on the left side where the distance between the antenna and the ground plane is just 0.5mm?  Could there be zero ground plane there?  What is the minimum ground plane on the long side of 13.4mm?  There is a case where we would just want the antenna at one end of the design, and not increase the form factor.

Hi James,

The antenna could be moved closer to the left if the SMT line allows it but there still must be a 0.5mm minimum clearance on the right of the antenna.
