M10578-a3 high altitude issues
Hi,

I am currently working with antenova M10578-a3 GPS module and in the data sheet, it is mentioned that maximum altitude is < 18 km. What happens if it goes beyond this altitude ?

Most commercial GNSS receivers are limited for velocity and altitude. If the module breaks either limit the module will cease to output any data until it is back within those limits. This was implemented for security to prevent the use with ballistic missile systems. Some chip makers have higher limits now for altitude, I will be contacting MTK to see if this 18km limit will be increased in the future with a FW update.

Is there any other commercially available chips which could work at high altitudes (30 - 40 kms) ?

Hi, I believe other chip vendors who can go to 50km, ublox has this on some modules.

I have contacted MTK on this matter, there is a FW version for altitudes up to 80km. This means we can offer a custom FW revision with this option. Please contact techsupport@antenova.com for more information.
